I have a bad right knee, what are some ways I can exercise without hurting it and still get myself into shape?
I would like to be able to get back into shape without causing any more damage to my knee.

- Get some advice from a sports injury therapist or the physio dept at the hospital. Here is not a place to get medical advice......you could end up making your knee worse.
- Well, it depends what is wrong with your knee. My friend had a moving patella, and she still ran in 4 100 meter races, but she was heavily advised not to. You have to be careful though - England Footballer Michael Owen, and England Cricketers Simon Jones, and Michael Vaughn had problems with their knees. One day, their knees just got tired and sort of snapped. Just ask your doctor!
- Isometrics Hop along on your left foot.
- If you live near a YMCA you might wanna try getting into water aerobics. Basically you work out in the pool. Stationary bikes would probably be ok if you work your way up slowly.
- Depends on what is wrong with your knee. The best things you can do without causing further damage are riding a bike (no hills), swimming, and using a cross trainer such as an elliptical trainer. Walking can help as well. Strength training exercises are good also such as leg extensions and leg curls these will help strengthen the ligaments of the knee as well as strengthen the muscles of the leg. Squats and lunges may hurt, so don't do them if you experience pain. I would suggest finding out what exactly is wrong with your knee before beginning any exercise regime. Good Luck!
- read tips on some great exercise programs, including yoga on this site
- See if an elliptical exercise unit is tolerable. Start at easy setting.
